Church of Santa María la Mayor

Period: Siglo XIII-XVIII

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is the oldest temple in Alcázar de San Juan, documented as a parish since 1226. Its architecture reflects centuries of evolution: the semicircular brick apse preserves the Mudéjar heritage of its medieval origins, while the three spacious naves with a Latin cross plan display the Renaissance design of 16th-century renovations. The main altarpiece, a masterpiece of La Mancha Baroque, presides over the chancel with exuberant Solomonic columns and polychrome carvings. Located in the quiet Plaza de Santa María, this church invites visitors to contemplate the harmonious layering of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque styles that narrate the living history of the city.
