Church of the Holy Trinity
Period: Siglo XVII
The Church of the Holy Trinity holds a privileged place in Spain's cultural history, for within its walls lies the baptismal certificate of a child named Miguel, dated 9 November 1558, whom many scholars identify as Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The temple, built in the 17th century following the sober and elegant lines of the Herrera style, has an austere stone façade that conceals an interior of serene beauty. Its single nave covered by a barrel vault leads the eye towards the high altar, while a special display case exhibits a facsimile of the baptismal document that forever links Alcázar de San Juan with the author of Don Quixote. Visiting this temple is to enter one of the most passionate debates in Spanish literary history.
